Last week, the Japanese government provided an emergency grant of 1.45 million dollars for the procurement of cold chain equipment (CCE) needed for the delivery, transport and storage of COVID-19 vaccines. The finance will be availed through a partnership with the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF). Some 230 mid-level cold chain technicians and 420 health care facility staff will be trained on the operation and maintenance of the CCE and on the use and monitoring of the vaccines. Inoculations have been ongoing since Ethiopia received 2.2 million doses of the AstraZeneca vaccine through the COVAX facility in early March. China also donated 300,000 doses of its Sinopharm vaccine later that month and both are being administered at government health offices across the country.
