The Federal Jobs Creation Commission and the Ministry of Health have partnered up to launch a programme to streamline employment opportunities for medical professionals. Lack of employment for medical professionals has been a growing concern; a letter addressed to the Health Ministry on the rising joblessness of medical doctors amassed over 450 signatures in less than a week's time last August. There is one physician for every 10,000 people in Ethiopia, according to a report by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP). The Ministry is looking to three options to create employment, according to people organising the joint effort. Increasing domestic employment capacity, looking into international job opportunities, and expansion of new models of health service provisions. The program is designed to support health professionals in forming their own health service enterprises and engaging in self-employment options, organisers say.
