The National Electoral Board of Ethiopia (NEBE), which proposed June 5, 2021, as the sixth national election's polling date, has left Tigray Regional State out of the schedule. During the announcement of the new schedule last week, the Board disclosed that it plans to open 45,000 polling stations across the country between December 25 and January 24.
The training of poll workers is expected to take place between February 1 and February 28, while voter registration is planned to occur from the end of March to April 9. Candidate registration will be held during the final two weeks of February, according to the schedule.
Candidates will hold campaigns from February 15 to May 31, five days ahead of election day, with the final result announced between June 6 and June 28.
Even though the Board and the Regional State's provisional administration have stated that the elections will be held in the Regional State, the newly announced schedule of activities has omitted Tigray.
The dates for elections in Tigray will be announced when the interim government is capable of providing support for election activities and conditions in the region are conducive to hosting an election, according to the Board.
