Nestlé to Recycle Plastic Waste

Dec 19 , 2020

Nestlé, a global food and beverage company, has launched a waste management programme to tackle plastic pollution in Ethiopia in partnership with local sustainability consultant TS Environment. The company aims to achieve plastics neutrality with the programme: collecting and processing an amount of plastic equivalent to that contained in its products sold in the country. The announcement comes following a promise the company made in 2018 to make all of its packaging recyclable or reusable by 2025. Nestlé hopes that the initiative will create employment opportunities for residents in the collection, sorting, weighing and transportation of plastic waste. Once collected, the waste will be sorted, and the recyclable plastic will be processed into other products. In contrast, the non-recyclable plastic will be incinerated by what it claims will be an environmentally friendly process. The programme will first be launched in targeted locations across Addis Abeba, and the company hopes to scale up its operations soon. By the end of 2020, Nestlé plans to collect and process an estimated 40tn of plastic waste.
