Japanese Agency Launches Rice Research Lab

Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) launched the National Rice Research Training Centre at Woreta town, in Amhara Regional state. The construction of the center was started back in 2013 with 170 million Br in financing from the government of Japan. Daisuke Matsunaga, Japanese Ambassador to Ethiopia, and Gedu Andargachew, president of Amhara Regional State, attended the inauguration ceremony. The aim of the centre is to conduct rice research, training and technology promotion to increase the productivity of rice farmers. Even though 46,000ha of land is suitable for rice cultivation and 134,000 farmers were engaged in rice farming, Ethiopia invests close to 200 million dollars in rice imports, according to a report from the Central Statistical Agency.
