Several landmarks in the capital have received their names from British politicians that served close to the Second World War. General Wingate, who has a neighbourhood named after him, led the Gideon force and accompanied Emperor Haileselassie upon his return to the capital expelling Italian occupiers in 1941. Daniel Sandford rallied forces within British-held territories and worked with Ethiopian resistance groups from the northern front. He held several advisory positions in Ethiopia, and his wife established the Sandford Community School, which has existed till now.
