Teff is cultivated by 15 million farmers in Ethiopia, accounting for 28.5 Pc of all cultivated land at 2.8 million hectares. Despite teff being part of the local diet for millennia, a Dutch company owned the patent until a court ruling in 2019 that nullified the patent claim. A Norwegian research institute referred to the debacle as a clear case of biopiracy.
