Addis Abeba Traffic Management Authority, in collaboration with the city police, has launched a month-long campaign to curb traffic accidents, following a surge in fatalities.
In the city’s first quarter, 102 people died in traffic accidents, with passenger, driver errors cited as the leading cause. During the same period, over 36,000 motorists ran red lights, 32,216 exceeded speed limits, and more than 11,000 pedestrians violated traffic rules, facing legal action.
Pedestrians accounted for 83pc of fatalities, drivers 16pc, and the remainder resulted from technical failures. Male drivers were identified as the most affected demographic.
The campaign operates under the slogan: "Obey the law while driving."
