A statue of Emperor Menelik II stands at the eponymous referral hospital located on Russia Street. The 114-year-old hospital was initially funded and staffed by members of the Russian Red Cross. Despite Ethiopia establishing the first hospital over a century ago, access to modern medical services remains a significant challenge with 18pc of the population not having access to a healthcare facility within a two-hour walking distance.
