Ethio-Djibouti Railway has secured 20.4 million dollars in revenue from its freighter and passenger train services over the past eight months. The freighter earned revenues of 19.9 million Br, while the commuter has gained revenues of 537,400 dollars transporting 39,000 commuters. The railway, which shortens travelling time between Djibouti and Addis Abeba from three days to 12 hours, was constructed at a cost of 4.2 billion dollars. 70pc of the financing was secured from the Export-Import Bank of China. Extending from Sebeta to Djibouti’s Doraleh Container & Oil Terminal, the railway was inaugurated in December 2017. It is operated by the Ethio-Djibouti Standard Gauge Railway S.C that was established in April 2017 by a bilateral agreement signed between Ethiopia and Djibouti on December 16, 2016.
