The Federal Supreme Court is implementing a three-year project to ensure the appointment of judges is based on competence, to create a proper flow of court cases, conduct research and improve the existing infrastructure. The project will focus on three major areas: independence, impartiality and accountability of the court system, according to Chief Justice Meaza Ashenafi, president of the Federal Supreme Court. In addition, the Chief Justice pointed out that the justice system must ensure speedy trials and access to justice. “Problematic working areas will be prioritised and solved in order to reach the expected result in a short time,” Meaza said. According to a study that analysed the effectiveness of court systems of 126 countries, Ethiopian courts are ranked in 111th position in giving judgments in civil cases and 104th in criminal cases.
