Water Project in Dire Dawa Goes Operational

A potable water project that will give water access to 600,000 residents in Dire Dawa has become operational. Built with 900 million Br financing from the World Bank and the government of Ethiopia, the project involved the drilling of 14 deepwater wells, 92 Km of piping and nine water tankers. A 28Km power cable and 20 transformers were also installed to supply electric power to the project. The project will raise the rate of accessibility of water in the city from 45pc to 90pc, according to the city’s deputy mayor of the town, Mahadi Gire. It is expected to satisfy the city’s water demands for the next 20 years, according to Mahadi.
