SGS, a multinational company headquartered in Switzerland, will establish a fabric and garment testing laboratory in Hawassa Industrial Park. Currentlyc manufacturers must send samples overseas to test their products, which experts say is costly and time consuming. SGS is an inspection, verification, testing and certification company. It has more than 97,000 employees and operates a network of more than 2,600 offices and laboratories around the world. Ethiopia is touted as having a big potential in the textile industry. More than 65 textile investment projects have been launched by foreign investors in the last six years. The government planned to earn 779 million dollars from exports in the textile and garment industry by the end of the Second Edition of the Growth & Transformation Plan (GTP II) in 2020. Recently, the National Bank of Ethiopia legislated a new law that enables companies in the industrial parks to transact in foreign currency. The directive is aimed at benefiting indirect exporter companies like SGS.
