Parliament Passes Defense Ministry Reform Law

Apr 29 , 2023

A bill that entails service men and women with 30 years in the military are guaranteed government housing has been approved by the Parliament last week. It stipulates that auditing of the Ministry of Defence will be conducted by the federal auditor with special accommodations given for classifieds. This is the third wave of reforms to be ratified by Parliament concerning the national defence forces in the last five years. The chair of the Peace & Foreign Affairs Standing Committee, Dima Negewo (PhD) said the draft was put forth before the Parliament after a long and meticulous review. Some members applauded a bill concerning the defence force being put forth before Parliament as it was not a common practice during prior administrations. They had raised concerns regarding the proposition that bids would be open and international due to the sensitivity of purchases which was later clarified that direct purchases are also permitted by law. The State Minister for Defense, Martha Luigi indicated the proclamation will bring the Ministry a step closer to creating an independent, strong and multi-ethnic defence force. The proclamation aimed at reforming the National Defense Forces was passed with six abstentions and a majority vote.
