Customs Commission Launches Digital Payment System

A digital platform that allows customers of the Customs Commission to settle tax and commission payments was launched last week. The payment system is rendered through the Telebirr App powered by Ethiotelecom with officials hoping to ease the hustle faced by customers to make payments. Commissioner Debele Hika said the partnership culminates the commissions' desperate search to work with reliable digital financial service providers since prior attempts failed after huge investments. According to Frehiwot Tamiru, CEO of Ethiotelecom, such strategic partnerships are targeted to complement the organisation's aim of 'beyond connectivity' by utilizing the telecom infrastructure and elevating the provided services. A partnership agreement was penned between the CEO of Ethiotelecom, Frehiwot Tamiru and Customs Commissioner, Debele Qebeta at Hyatt Regency located on Africa Avenue (Bole Road). Bazezew Chane, deputy commissioner, the system will enable the Commission to easily collect payments, avoid CPO fraud and minimize operational costs by integrating modalities demanded by the complex nature of tax assessment.
