Addis Abeba Bans Three-Wheeled Vehicles, Sparks Public Transport Logjam

Transport authorities in Addis Abeba have banned the use of three-wheeled vehicles, known locally as 'Bajaj', on the city's streets. Mitiku Asmare, head of the city's Transport Bureau, has imposed the ban until a "proper regulatory framework" is in place and the relevance of the service is assessed.

The decision has resulted in a shortage of vehicles and lengthy queues at public transport terminals this morning, impacting the over 2.7 million residents who depend on the city's public transport system. The Bureau has registered over 6,100 Bajajs in the past eight months alone.

The move follows a bill proposed four months ago by the city's Transport Bureau and the Ministry of Transport & Logistics, planning to limit the movement of Bajaj vehicles to designated areas, establish tariffs, limit the number of passengers to three, and offer fuel subsidies for Bajaj drivers.
