Beer byproducts from breweries around Debre Berhan city, located 120Km northeast of the capital, are being used to produce animal feed. Debre Berhan Agriculture Research Centre has announced that the year-long laboratory research has shown a positive result. Ashenafi Kebede, an assistant researcher at the centre, said that the town is known for milk production, and the animal feed will improve the production capacity of dairy cows. He recalled that the beer by-products from the breweries were harmful to the environment and animal health and by combining the beer by-products with straw and limestone, increased the value and level of energy and protein and was able to upgrade the effectiveness of the animal feed. The assistant researcher also explained that the improved fodder has brought up to 40pc milk yield for a cow, and the centre has saved more than 1.9 million Br. He said the results of this feed technology are being tested on 24 enterprises engaged in dairy cow breeding and proved that the animal feed is making them productive and it would be accessible to other cow breeders in the Debre Berhan. Ashenafi said that the fodder prepared from beer by-products has no side effects and the cows' health will be maintained, enabling them to produce more and give dairy products to the farmers efficiently.
