Telebirr Garners 15.6m Users in Nine Months

Ethio telecom's mobile money platform, Telebirr, has managed to garner 15.6 million users since it was launched last May. Active users account for around 80pc of the client base. The platform facilitated 42.4 million transactions worth nearly eight billion Birr over its first nine months of operation. The state-owned Ethio telecom has also introduced options for remittance services on the platform, generating an inflow of 317.5 million dollars from 30 countries across the globe. Telebirr operates through 353 shops, 78 master agents, 57,000 agents and 13,500 merchants registered under it. Eleven banks, including the Commercial Bank of Ethiopia, the Bank of Abyssinia, and Awash and Dashen banks, have integrated their systems with the mobile money platform. Last week, Ethio telecom launched a traffic fine payment system through Telebirr in collaboration with the Addis Abeba Traffic Management Agency and the Federal Police. It allows traffic police to issue penalties digitally, and drivers to pay on the spot using Telebirr.
