Japan Backs Primary School Expansion

Feb 27 , 2021

A primary school expansion project, built with 100,000 dollars in support from Japan, was inaugurated in Gunchire, Gurage Zone in the Southern Nations, Nationalities & Peoples' Regional State. The expansion, which included two fully-furnished classroom blocks with four classrooms each, was fully funded through Japan's Grant Assistance for Grassroots & Human Security Projects (GGP). Japanese Ambassador Ito Takako, along with the mayor of Gunchire Town, attended the inauguration ceremony for the expansion, which included a latrine block, a water tank, and a hand washing facility. The additional facilities for the primary school are expected to accommodate 400 students, nearly double its previous capacity. First introduced in 1989, the GGP has implemented 400 projects in education, water supply, health services and other basic human needs. Last month, Japan granted 2.8 million Br through the GGP for the expansion of a garment training centre at Selam Children's Village, a nonprofit organisation.
