Japan granted 2.8 million Br for the expansion of a garment training centre at Selam Children's Village (SCV), a nonprofit organisation, earlier this week. The funds will go toward the construction of a vocational training building. Funneled through the Japanese Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Projects (GGP), the project is expected to double SCV's textiles training capacity to 240 trainees a year. Yamato Sewing Machine Manufacturing Co., a Japanese firm, will donate 10 sewing machines to the nonprofit upon completion of the building's construction. This marks the Embassy's second round of donation to SCV. It also provided the financial support for the launch of the garment training centre in 2015. Japan has implemented over 400 projects across Ethiopia through the GGP since the initiative was introduced in 1989. Selam Children's Village was founded in 1986 to support orphaned youth and has since expanded its operations to include vocational and educational training programmes.
