Ethiopia to Chair Nile Council of Ministers

Seleshi Bekele (PhD), minister of Water, Irrigation & Energy, has been appointed chairperson of the Nile Equatorial Lakes Council of Ministers. The Council is a political and decision-making body composed of water affair ministers from the member states of the Nile Basin Initiative. The Initiative is a partnership between the 10 Nile River riparian countries and aims to develop the river cooperatively. It is also tasked with promoting regional peace and security and lobbying for equitable use of the Nile waters. Seleshi was elected to chair the Council for the coming year and will be organising the Nile Development Forum in April 2020. “The Nile Basin Initiative is highly important to ensure fair utilisation of the Nile waters among the member states,” he said. "Member states should prioritise investing in water infrastructure."
