The Ministry of Science & Higher Education has chosen eight universities to serve as centres of excellence. Addis Abeba, Meqelle, Bahir Dar, Jimma, Arba Minch, Haramaya and Gonder universities were selected from all universities in the country. This decision followed observation of the eight higher education institutions' contribution to problem-solving research over the years, according to the Ministry. The Ministry will also work on different capacity-building measures to make these universities internationally competent in research and related fields. In addition to these selected universities, an additional 15 universities have been named as competency centres for science and technology and the rest of the 23 universities will be designated for general education. The Higher Education & Relevance Quality Agency, in charge of regulating the higher education sector, is also set to go through a major reform aimed at strengthening its supervisory role.
