Tigray State Swears in Election Commissioner

Tigray Regional State has sworn in Muluwork Kidanemariam, aka Memhir Muluwork, as the region's election commissioner. Muluwork, a political economy major, was approved as a commissioner by the Tigray Regional State Council last week. The commissioner, who was a member of the Ethiopian People's Revolutionary Party in his youth, will have a six-year term with the possibility of a one-term extension, according to the newly legislated regional election law of Tigray. Tsegreda Dibekul has been selected as the deputy commissioner, while Tseg Berhane (PhD), science and technology bureau head for the Regional State, Meressa Tsehaye and Mohammed Sied, have been selected as members. A committee of 10, composed of religious leaders, workers associations, civil associations and the business chamber of Tigray, accepted nominations from political parties, civil society and the public from July 12 to 14, 2020, by telephone. The committee had accepted over 750 phone calls, according to the head of the committee. The election commission will be tasked with the responsibility of establishing election districts, voter and candidate registration and ensuring civic education is provided throughout the region.
