Upper Chamber Approves Term Extensions for Federal, Regional Legislative Bodies

Jun 10 , 2020

Members of the House of Federation today approved the term extensions of members of parliament, the House of Federation and regional councils, as well as federal and regional executive bodies, until the upcoming elections are held.

The House approved the recommendation forwarded from the Council of Constitutional Inquiry with four votes made against and one member abstaining. About 119 of the 153 members attended the session to discuss the recommendations from the Council, which also endorsed that the general elections be held within nine to 12 months. This will take place when the Ministry of Health, the Public Health Institute and the science community are assured that the pandemic no longer poses a risk to public health and the parliament approves the advice.

The Council has been working on recommendations to help the House decide the fate of the upcoming nation elections since the issue was referred by the parliament last month.

Parliamentarians pushed the matter to the Council following the National Electoral Board of Ethiopia (NEBE) proposal for the extension of the general elections, citing the pandemic and the restrictions on public gatherings as an obstacle for the Board to proceed with voter registration and polling.
