Daniel Bekele (PhD), Ethiopian Human Rights Commissioner.
Parliament has approved the appointment of Daniel Bekele (PhD) as Commissioner of the Ethiopian Human Rights Commission.
A lawyer by training and an advocate of human rights with Human Rights Watch, his appointment was approved during today's session that was attended by 315 MPs. An MP abstaining from the Somali Peoples' Democratic Party.
Daniel completed his doctoral studies at Oxford University in international law. He also obtained two master's degree in international law & human rights and social & environmental development from Oxford University and Addis Abeba University, respectively.
He was one of the civic organisation's leaders active during the tumultuous period of the 2005 election when he was imprisoned, charged with treason and convicted. He was later pardoned by the administration of the late Meles Zenawi, together with opposition leaders and journalists.
