Gilgel Gibe III Hydro Electric Dam
Nine of the 10 turbines of Gilgel Gibe III Hydro Electric Dam have failed this afternoon due to technical issues, leaving the country in a complete blackout.
Technicians of the Ethiopian Electric Power are working to restore the power, which is expected to take at least an hour, according to a source close to the case.
Built for 1.8 billion dollars and started operations five years ago, the Dam has a capacity of generating 1,870MW of electric power.
Gilgel Gibe III constitutes close to 44pc of the total power generating capacity of the country.
