Ambachew Mekonnen (PhD), president of the Ahmara Regional State.
An attempt on the lives of Ambachew Mekonnen (PhD), president of the Ahmara Regional State, and Megbaru Kebede, Attorney General of the Regional State, has failed in the town of Bahir Dar today, sources disclosed to Fortune.
Spokesperson of the Prime Minister's Office, Nigussu Tilahun, described the situation as a "failed coup," but sources in Bahir Dar say the situation remains "fluid and dangerous" where active hostilities are taking place in the regional state's headquarters and the ruling party's office.
Demeke Mekonnen, chairman of the ruling party in the region, the Amhara Democratic Party, is on a tour to the United States.
There are reports of causalities, according to multiple sources.
